Game-changing BBC series is returning after 25 years Zoe Hodges

It is making a comeback!

The BBC are set to revive one of its game-changing shows from the 90s in what is set to be a real blast from the past for fans of the beloved series.

‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ which first aired 25 years ago is tipped for a return to UK TV screens and fans are buzzing.

The six-episode series from 1999 transported viewers into the world of the prehistoric creatures using computer-generated imagery and animatronics.

15 million viewers tuned in to watch the series premiere, making it the most watched science programme in British TV during the 20th century.

It went on to win two BAFTAs and three Emmy awards and paved the way for a whole franchise which included ‘Walking with Cavemen’ and ‘Walking with Monsters’.

However, it is no wonder it took so long to mount a comeback as the series became the most expensive docuseries ever made, costing £37,654 per minute to produce.

The new series, which was announced back in June will take us, not only back in time to the Jurassic era but back to our childhoods too.

The six-part series will focus on those dinosaurs whose ‘remains are currently being unearthed by the world’s leading dinosaur hunters’.

The BBC production, set to air in 2025, will be co-produced with ZDF and France Télévisions.

Jack Bootle, BBC Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual said: “A whole new generation of viewers is about to fall in love with ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’. The original series was one of the most exciting factual shows of all time, and this reinvention builds on that amazing legacy.

“Each episode is underpinned by the very latest science but is also filled with drama – making this a series for both dino lovers and people who just want to be told a great story.”

Andrew Cohen, Head of BBC Studios Science Unit added: “It’s the ultimate dinosaur show, where you’ll be hiding behind the sofa one moment and having your mind blown the next. The prehistoric world meets premium documentary production, like never before.”
